“Abortion is a Form of Killing That We Need to be Able to Defend — an Acceptable Violence”

A radical defence of abortion | Sophie Lewis

Sophie Lewis calls for a more radical response to abortion; recognising that it is a form of necessary violence. We need to move away from the focus on abortion as just a form of health-care, or arguments around when human life begins, and defend abortion as a right to stop doing gestational work.Full Surrogacy Now: Feminism Against Family by Sophie Lewis is out now https://www.versobooks.com/books/2951-full-surrogacy-now

Let’s think through what this very educated woman is saying in this video:

“…I wonder if we can think about defending abortion
as a right to stop doing gestational work….
Abortion is, in my opinion,…
a form of killing.
It is a form of killing that we need to be able to defend.
I’m not interested in where a human life starts to exist….
The other end of the spectrum is the process of learning to die well…
at the end of our lives as well as at the beginning.

“Looking at the biology of the *hemochorial **placentation
helps me to think about the violence that,
innocently, a fetus metes out vis-a-vis a gestator.
And that violence is an unacceptable violence
for someone who doesn’t want to do gestational work.
The violence that that gestator meets out to essentially go on strike or exit that work place is an acceptable violence.”

~ Sophie Lewis
author of “Full Surrogacy Now: Feminism Against Family”

Merriam Webster definitions of *hemochorial **placentation:

*having the fetal epithelium bathed in maternal blood; ** the arrangement of placentas and ovules in a plant ovary, the development of the placenta and attachment of the fetus to the uterus during pregnancy]

Ms. Lewis admits abortion is killing; however, because she does not acknowledge God’s law — thou shall not murder — she has come to her own conclusions about the morality of doing such to the body of another human being (the pre-born child’s) against his/her will.

The Bible is clear, however, that God “hates the hands that shed innocent blood” (Prov. 6:17). Murdering human beings of any age, size, or location is soul-damming sin, Ms. Lewis.
